Keep Your Canvas Looking Like A Masterpiece

You have purchased one of our blank canvases and now you have a beautiful painted canvas on your wall. But over the years dust, dirt and even sunlight dull its beauty. Like anything of value, your artwork requires some TLC to keep it looking fresh and vibrant.

If you’ve wondered how to care for your painted canvases so they’ll last for many years (but don’t want to become an art-restoration guru in the process), you’re in luck! So let’s get into some easy, fun, and impactful ways to protect your artwork.

1. Location, Location, Location! 🏠

The first part of properly caring for your canvas is picking the right location. Here’s what to avoid:

🛑 Direct Sunlight – UV rays are the cancer to beautiful hues. Over time, they may make your painting lose its colour. Keep your canvas away from windows, if you can, or if framing it, consider investing in UV-protective glass.

🛑 Soaking Wet & Hot — Humidity can create mould, and the heat swells, then warps the canvas. Don’t hang your art in bathrooms or kitchens, or in direct association with a radiator.

Best Spot? An airy room that is temperature stable and does not get direct light. We're talking about living rooms, hallways or bedrooms.

2. Dusting: The Right Way 🖌️

Dust is tricky — it collects on your painting and dulls it over time. But before you pick up that feather duster, here’s how to do it safely:

✔️ In the case of soft, dry microfiber cloth or clean, natural-hair paintbrush (such as a makeup brush).

✔️ Rubbing or brushing in one direction only — no scrubbing!

✔️ For deep dust, a canister of compressed air (typically for keyboards) can help blow particles off without touching things.

🚫 DO NOT USE: Wet wipes, household cleaners or paper towels. These can leave residue, scratch the paint job or discolour it.

3. Cleaning Without Causing a Catastrophe 🚿

If your painting has accumulated more than dust (such as smudges or stains), don’t rush to grab soap and water. Instead, try:

🧴 The soft bread trick – Sounds weird, but a piece of plain white bread can gently lift surface dirt. Dab (don’t rub) the bread on the canvas and watch the dirt transfer!

🖌️ Professional cleaning — If your canvas has accumulated significant dirt, a conservator or art professional can gently and safely restore it.

4. Frame It Up! 🖼️

Framing is not just about good looks — it protects your artwork from dust, accidental bumps and warping.

✔️ For those framing your canvas, choose a floating frame so the edges stay visible.

✔️ Use UV-protective glass if your painting is in a bright, natural light area.

Unframed canvases should be hung on loops instead of resting them on the floor, which can cause pressure points and distortion.

5. Storing your artwork well 📦

Not every canvas goes on display forever—and if you’re looking to store one, do it right:

✅ Store the canvas outstretched in a dry, cool place or up, inside a protective cover.

✅ Cover it with acid-free paper or bubble wrap to protect it from dust and scratches.

✅ Never place paintings on top of each other without something in between—they will stick or crack.

6. Touch-Ups & Repairs 🖌️

In time minor scratches or small cracks may form. If you notice:

✔️ Small scratches? A touch of matching acrylic or oil paint can remedy it.

✔️ Loose or sagging canvas? A little mist of water on the back of the canvas will allow it to tighten up a little bit when it dries.

✔️ Major damage? Time to bring in a professional art restorer.

7. Bonus Tip: Keep an Eye on It! 👀

Take a step back every once in a while and examine your painting. Look for fading, cracks or anything suspicious. Identifying problems early on can stave off larger issues later.

And most of all—have fun with your art! 🎨 Remain clean and maintained, and you’ll be able to admire its beauty for a long time.

Final Thoughts

My painted canvases are not just decorations—they are stories. With just a bit of care and attention, you can have them looking as beautiful as when they were made. So, if you’re an artist or painter, follow these simple tips, and let your paintings shine!
